5th year students and their teachers joined us in UCC for 'Paramedic for a Day'!
We were delighted to welcome secondary school students to UCC for our Information Day, where they had the chance to find out more about what it really means to be a paramedic.
'Paramedic for a Day' took place at Brookfield Health Sciences Complex on Saturday May 20th. This information day was held in anticipation of the CAO Entry BSc (Hons) Paramedicine Programme which is scheduled to start in September 2024.
With invitations extended to second level schools throughout Munster, 5th year students and their teachers were given details of the student journey from entry requirements to information on the curriculum and clinical placements. There were also workshop style sessions on topics such as 'Life as a Paramedic' along with exhibitions of clinical and specialised services, which were facilitated by the National Ambulance Service.
We were delighted with the turnout and the students rotated through 5 stations, covering in detail:
- The student journey – programme/entry criteria/driving licence requirement/placements, including a Q&A session.
- Paramedic Life – rosters/uniform/pay/progression, including a Q&A session.
- Clinical awareness/CPR/problem solving, including hands on participation by students.
- Operations – the students entered the back of the ambulance and were taken through real scenarios.
- Emerging threat – demonstration of a decontam unit and the speciality of the emerging threat team.
"Awesome Day."
"Slay!"
"Such a great day."
"Learned lots about being a paramedic."
"Definitely consider this course."
It was a very successful day with terrific feedback received from the 5th year students in attendance!
