University College Cork, Chair of Information Technology in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (IT in AEC) invites applications for an appointment as Research Assistant or Post Doctorate Researcher to contribute to research in the areas of simulation, visualization, and information management for energy profiling.

The Chair is involved in the recently launched research project intUBE - a joint Industry-University Cluster of 12 European Partners funded by 7th Framework Programme of the European Union for a period of three years with an overall budget of Euro 3.8 million.

intUBE aims to develop tools for measuring and analyzing building energy profiles based on user comfort needs. These tools for Intelligent Building Management shall be embedded in Neighbourhood Management Systems to support timely and optimal energy distribution across groups of buildings based on predicted user demand and underlying innovative Business Models.

Reporting to the Chair of IT in AEC, the Post Holder will:

  • Develop concepts for new business models to provide services for efficient and intelligent use of buildings’ energy information.
  • Contribute to the development of simulation and visualization tools for energy profiling and its underlying methodologies
  • Liaise frequently with major work package partners based in Germany, and the U.K.
  • Assist in the delivery of postgraduate courses in Energy in Buildings and Facilities Management and the supervision of graduate projects
  • Contribute to the development of research proposals

The successful applicant should have a strong background in Energy Consumption Management; with a focus on Energy Simulation and Demand Prediction.  Excellent knowledge and practical experience in Energy Simulation and Computational Fluid Dynamics are highly desirable. Additionally, candidates should have knowledge and experience in the management of distributed Database Management Systems. Programming skills in Java, C++ or C-Sharp are of advantage.

The suitable candidate will have a First Class Honours Degree, a Masters -, or PhD-degree  in Civil or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent degrees, e.g. Dipl.-Ing.), or in Business Information Systems. He/she should have published in relevant areas and will have 1 to 3 years of work experience in industry or academia.

Excellent communication skills are essential. A proven ability to work well in a team is desirable. The need to work flexible hours is required. The knowledge of a second language (German) would be of advantage. If required, the candidate will have the opportunity to work on a PhD-Thesis.

Salary:   Appointment will be as Research Assistant (BEng  26,335 to 30,730 / Masters € 32,632 to € 40,717 plus 13.5% employer’s contribution to pension) or Post Doctorate Researcher (€40,638 to € 44,572 plus 13.5% employer’s contribution to pension) depending on qualifications & experience.
