Professor J. J. Lee

'Interpreting 1916'

Joe Lee is one of Ireland’s most celebrated historians.

Currently Glucksman Chair of Irish History at New York University, he was Professor of Modern History / History at UCC from 1974-2002.

He is best known for his two ground-breaking books, The Modernisation of Irish Society (1973, 2008) and Ireland 1912-1985: Politics and Society (1989), currently on its eleventh reprint. Professor Lee’s current research focuses on Irish and Irish-American historiography in a transnational context.

Ireland 1912-1985 contained characteristically thought-provoking perspectives on the 1916 Rising and its context, and this lecture, in memory of his former graduate student Diarmuid Whelan, will build on those insights in the context of current debates about how best to commemorate this seminal event.

All welcome
