Commemorating 1916

Cork County Library Local Studies Department is hosting a talk by Gabriel Doherty of UCC; “1916 and Beyond” on Thursday 1st Oct at 1.30pm at the County Library Headquarters, Carrigrohane Road.

The talk will be the first in a series of activities being organised by Cork County Library to mark the 1916 commemorations. Gabriel Doherty, of UCC’s School of History, is also on the Expert Advisory Group on Commemoration to mark the Decades of Centenaries.



The lecture will focus on Cork’s role in the 1916 Rising, and afterwards through to the War of Independence and Civil War. The lecture will look at Cork’s profile prior to, and during the Rising and in subsequent years, as well as some of the Cork personalities who took part in the fighting. It will also consider some of the possible approaches to the commemoration of the period in the city and county.
