Damian Shiels is an archaeologist specialising in military and conflict-related sites. Currently a director with Rubicon Heritage Services Ltd., he was formerly a curator of the award-winning "Soldiers & Chiefs" military history exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland. He has published and lectured widely both nationally and internationally on aspects of Ireland's military archaeology and military history. Damian has been carrying out in-depth research into the Irish of the American Civil War for a number of years, publishing much of this work on www.irishamericancivilwar.com, named best Arts & Culture Blog at the 2015 Blog Awards Ireland. In 2013 he published The Irish in the American Civil War (The History Press) and is currently completing a book on the evidence for Irish immigrants in American Civil War Widows and Dependents Pension Files.
