State Announces €2bn Capital Spending Plan for Schools Construction

Over 300 schools construction projects, including completely new buildings and extensions to existing facilities, were announced by the Department of Education today. The total budget for the programme is €2bn.
The new schools are required due to growth in the number of school-age children. Approximately 25,000 additional students will enter the primary school system by 2018, and secondary school numbers will increase by 15,000 over the same time period. After 2018, primary school numbers are expected to decline, but there will be strong growth in secondary school enrolments for a further decade.
