Professor Marguerite Nyhan
Biography
Prof Marguerite Nyhan is Full Professor of Engineering for Sustainability in the School of Engineering & Architecture at University College
Prof Nyhan founded and now directs the Nyhan Sustainable Futures Research Group which harnesses new and emerging digital technologies for improving our understanding of the science of sustainable, healthy, liveable and equitable future cities. Marguerite has interdisciplinary expertise in sustainable cities, urban environmental engineering, urban studies, urban analytics, emissions modelling, air quality modelling, population exposure modelling, environmental epidemiological modelling methods and environmental justice. Prof Nyhan’s research has been published extensively in leading academic journals including Nature and Nature Cities.
As lead Principal Investigator, Prof Nyhan has been awarded over €7 million in funding for both ground-breaking research and pioneering educational programmes. Marguerite is lead PI on the nationally coordinated Sustainable Futures project which focuses on research-driven interdisciplinary sustainability education. Prof Nyhan established the Sustainable Futures Lab and founded and chairs the Sustainable Futures Forum at University College Cork.
Prof Nyhan has world-leading international research experience from her work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University and the United Nations in the United States.
Research Interests
- Professor Nyhan’s research expertise includes the following:
i. Sustainable, net-zero, healthy, liveable and equitable cities of the future;
ii. Leveraging data analytics, sensor technologies and artificial intelligence-driven models for urban environmental engineering and sustainability applications;
iii. Environmental systems modelling including urban emissions modelling, air pollution modelling and greenspace quantification;
iv. Developing the science underpinning ICT-enabled tools for cities and citizens;
v. Air quality, urban mobility and health;
vi. Data-driven human exposures modelling and environmental epidemiology;
vii. Transportation emissions modelling;
