Postgraduate Research Library
Postgraduate Research Library
An application for funding for the construction of additional library space was made by the University to the Higher Education Authority in March 2001 under the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (Cycle 3). Approval was granted in December 2001. This proposal was submitted on the basis that additional library space at UCC would:
- improve research performance at UCC by enhancing access to UCC's research library and information resources across all subject areas;
- significantly improve access to key undergraduate library collections;
- exploit modern information technology in the delivery of library services to the local and wider community
The addition of new library space at UCC aimed to:
- provide improved accommodation for the University's Special Collections and Research Archives, including enhanced access by readers;
- improve access to electronic information resources;
- establish clusters of subject collections for undergraduate and research users
- simplify library services to research users
- integrate all Main Campus library collections and services in a single location
The feasibility study was presented to the Buildings Committee in January 2004 and the preferred scheme was a 6,000 m2, €30.7m extension to existing Boole Library to the east. A planning application was submitted to Cork City Council in early July 2004 and full planning permission was received in October 2004.
