Spring Conferring 2020 PhD Medicine and Health

Congratulations to Dr Sofia Cussotto, Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience and Dr Karen O'Connor, Department of Physiology who were conferred with PhD Medicine and Health at the UCC Spring Conferring Ceremony on Friday 21st February 2020

Dr Sofia Cussotto completed her doctoral studies at University College Cork under the supervision of Prof. John F. Cryan and Prof. Ted Dinan, Department of Psychiatry, having previously received her Masters degree from the University of Milan in Italy. For her PhD thesis Dr Cussotto investigated the importance of the microbiota-gut-liver-brain axis in the intake and fate of brain-targeting brugs. Currently, Dr Cussotto is a post-doctoral fellow at the NutriNeuro lab in Bordeaux, investigating the interplay between inflammation, depression and psychoactive drugs.

Dr Karen O'Connor completed her doctoral studies in the Department of Physiology and Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience, University College Cork under the supervision of Prof. Ken O'Halloran and Prof. John Cryan.  Dr O'Connor investigated the role of the gut microbiota in the control of breathing and cardiovascular function as a PhD candidate. Currently, Dr Karen O'Connor is a post-doctoral research within the Department of Physiology, University College Cork in Dr. Fiona McDonald's laboratory investigating a Triology of Stressors in the Intensive Care Unit.
