UCC Joins European Maritime Day Celebrations in Cork

Cork will host the prestigious European Maritime Day (EMD) from 21-23 May 2025, marking a significant event for the city and University College Cork (UCC).
This annual EU conference, dedicated to maritime affairs and sustainable blue growth, will bring together approximately 1,200 delegates for high-level sessions, workshops, and exhibitions.
UCC will play a prominent role in the event, showcasing its leadership in maritime research, education, and capacity building. The university's involvement includes dedicated workshops on 21 May in UCC’s Centre for Executive Education, Lapp’s Quay, and participation in the EMD Conference on 22-23 May. Professor John O'Halloran, President of UCC, will attend the opening session of the conference, and UCC staff will participate in a special expo at City Hall. UCC will also exhibit an art-based herbarium showcasing specimens of seaweeds from coastal areas around Ireland with a digital code and map with information about its habitat, as part on an ocean literacy engagement initiative.
A highlight of the week will be a visit to the Lir National Ocean Test Facility at the ERI Beaufort Building in Ringaskiddy, where the Mayors of the EU Cities Network will explore UCC’s maritime and energy research. A delegation of EU Commissioners will also tour the facility.
EMD 2025 is organised by the European Commission, Cork City Council, and the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications (DECC). The UCC organising committee includes Prof Sarah Culloty, Head, College of Science, Engineering and Food Science; Jeremy Gault and Aoife Deane MaREI/ERI. The event follows last year's conference in Denmark, where Prof. Brian Ó Gallachóir, UCC’s Associate Vice-President of Sustainability, and Director of the Environmental Research Institute and Co-Director of the MaREI Centre, represented UCC. The hosting baton will be passed from Cork to Limassol, Cyprus, for EMD 2026.
