UCC Co-Hosts Premier International Conference on Smart Computing

27 Jun 2025

UCC in collaboration with Munster Technological University (MTU), hosted the 11th IEEE International Conference on Smart Computing (SMARTCOMP) from 16–19 June 2025.

As the premier global forum in the field of smart computing, IEEE SMARTCOMP 2025 brought together over 100 delegates from around the world, including researchers and industry experts from the United States, Italy, Japan, and beyond.

Co-chaired by Prof Dirk Pesch (UCC) and Prof Laura Barnes (University of Virginia), the conference showcased the latest developments in the rapidly evolving domain of smart computing—an interdisciplinary field that merges advances in sensor-based systems, the Internet of Things (IoT), cyber-physical systems, edge computing, big data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The vibrant programme featured more than 75 peer-reviewed papers presented across the main research track, industry track, workshops, poster sessions, and demonstrations. A particularly well-attended workshop programme, spanning 7 thematic tracks, highlighted the depth and diversity of global research efforts in this space.

SMARTCOMP 2025 offered participants a rich cultural and academic experience in Cork, beginning with a welcome reception at the historic Cork City Gaol. The conference concluded with a Gala Dinner in UCC’s iconic Aula Maxima, where attendees walked the halls once graced by George Boole, whose revolutionary work in algebra laid the backbone of modern computing.

UCC’s strong research leadership was evident throughout the event, particularly through the contributions from members of the ADVANCE CRT (Research Ireland Centre for Research Training in Advanced Networks for Sustainable Societies). PhD researcher Ramin Soleimani presented during the workshop sessions, while Malik Qirtas, an ADVANCE CRT alumnus and now postdoctoral researcher at INSIGHT, was awarded Best Poster/Demo Award for his work EaseTalk: An LLM-Driven Speech Practice, developed in collaboration with Dr Andrea Visentin and Marco Faggiani, a UCC BSc Computer Science graduate.

Further highlighting UCC’s organisational leadership, Prof Cormac Sreenan chaired the PhD Forum Track, Dr Andrea Visentin served as Local Co-Chair, and Dr Aisling O’Driscoll led the coordination of the Tutorials programme. The operational, logistics and financial execution of the conference was managed by James Duggan and Luis Gómez de Membrillera, ensuring a seamless experience for attendees.

This international gathering not only showcased groundbreaking innovations but also reinforced Cork’s reputation as a dynamic centre for interdisciplinary and impactful research. As smart computing continues to transform industries and societies, UCC remains at the forefront of training, research, and global collaboration in this critical field.
