UCC scientists named among global highly cited researchers

UCC researchers feature prominently in the 2024 Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher List.
The Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher List includes individuals who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their field of research and is an internationally recognised testament to scientific excellence.
Twelve Principal Investigators at APC Microbiome Ireland (APC), a world leading Research Ireland centre, are listed on the annual Clarivate rankings - nine based at UCC. APC researchers represent one third of all Irish-based researchers listed by Clarivate.
Microbiome science is increasingly visible in international scientific rankings as evidence mounts of the benefits of microbes to the health and wellbeing of people, animals and the planet.
The 2024 list includes Professors Paul Ross, Fergus Shanahan, Colin Hill, Paul O’Toole, Douwe Van Sinderen, Jens Walter, Gerard Clarke, John Cryan, Ted Dinan of UCC, Professors Catherine Stanton and Paul Cotter of Teagasc, and Professor Ines Thiele of University of Galway – all of whom are Principal Investigators at APC.
Prof Paul Ross, Director at APC said:
"Scientific excellence is the cornerstone of APC, it is fundamental that our research is conducted at the highest standard. To be acknowledged for this with the inclusion of twelve of our researchers in this year’s Clarivate List is a testament to work ongoing at APC. Year after year our researchers are included on the List in high numbers. There is a huge interest in harnessing microbiome research in industry for human and planetary health and we are always building our capacity to meet this demand."
David Pendlebury, Head of Research Analysis at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate said:
"The Highly Cited Researchers list identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers including those at APC Microbiome Ireland whose significant and broad influence in their fields translates to impact in their research community. Their pioneering innovations contribute to a healthier, more sustainable and secure world. These researchers’ achievements strengthen the foundation of excellence and innovation that drives societal progress."
