UCC celebrates Fascination of Plants Day

UCC will celebrate Fascination of Plants Day (FoPD) on Friday, 17 May with an exhibition and guided tours at the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences.
Where: School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Butler Building, North Mall Campus, North Mall, Cork, T23 TK30.
When: Friday, 17 May from 1pm to 3.30pm.
The seventh FoPD is organised under the umbrella of the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO). The goal of this activity is to get people fascinated by plants and emphasise the importance of plant science in various areas:
- Agriculture and Sustainable Food Production: Understanding how plants contribute to nutritious food production.
Horticulture and Forestry: Exploring the role of plants in horticulture and forestry. - Plant-Based Non-Food Products: Highlighting plant-based products such as paper, timber, chemicals, energy, and pharmaceuticals.
- Environmental Conservation: Recognising the significance of plants in environmental conservation.
Event Details
As part of FoPD, the public is invited to visit the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) at UCC. The event will feature guided glasshouse tours departing from the Butler Building (T23 TK30) at 1.15pm and 3pm. These tours will last approximately 30 minutes.
Visitors can explore various plant-related topics, including:
- Trees: Learn about the Atlantic rainforest and the Irish Tree Explorers Network.
- Sustainable Food Production and Agricultural Weeds: Understand how plants contribute to sustainable food systems.
- Plant Biotechnology: Discover advancements in plant science.
- The Age of Chocolate: Explore the fascinating world of cacao plants.
- Plant Climate Responses: Understand how plants adapt to changing climates.
