News 2023
Welcome from the Head of College

Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to another news round-up from the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS).
We have had an active and energetic semester to date, welcoming new and returning students to campus. On 14 October, we held our annual Open Day for prospective students. Over 7,000 people attended the Open Day and it was delightful to meet our prospective students and experience such a vibrant and lively atmosphere around the university. Thank you to all our staff and students from the College of SEFS who worked tirelessly to make this year's Open Day so successful. Our staff were also busy this autumn attending national and international student recruitment fairs - extending our global reach and informing students about our exceptional teaching and learning experience.
A recent highlight of the semester was the launch of a new exhibition at the Western Gateway Building that will allow audiences to discover the life and career of Professor Jan Ćukasiewicz, Polish genius of Logic, philosopher, and post-war refugee in Ireland. It was an honour to welcome His Excellency Prof Arkady Rzegocki, Ambassador-Designate of the Republic of Poland to Ireland to open the exhibition. Thank you also to Dr Kevin Hayes, Prof Sebastian Wieczorek, and colleagues in the School of Mathematical Sciences for hosting the event.
Welcome to all our new staff who have joined the College of SEFS in the past number of weeks. I would especially like to acknowledge the appointment of Dr William Burchill, our new FBD Lecturer in Sustainable Agriculture (Soil Science), School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences. Dr Burchill's appointment will support both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching adding critical mass to the agricultural science team at UCC.
Communication underpins our efforts to create an inclusive and respectful environment, where staff feel valued and supported. With this in mind, we have created a dedicated space on Workvivo where College of SEFS staff can share news, events, and shout-outs to colleagues. This newsletter will also be published on the space. If you have any ideas for how we can improve our communication with staff, please do not hesitate to contact me.
November marks the beginning of Conferrings season, and we are looking forward to celebrating our next generation of STEM graduates who will bring their skills and experience to the wider world. It promises to be a lively and engaging month ahead with lots of events and activities taking place around the university and I look forward to meeting you at the Conferrings and other events on campus.
Regards,
Professor Sarah Culloty,
Head, College of Science, Engineering and Food Science.
