UCC STEM Awards

The annual UCC STEM Awards recognises and celebrates the successes and achievements of students and staff of the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science during the previous academic year.
These include high-profile award recipients nominated for recognition by their unit, college-level award winners, and student-nominated outstanding staff members. Students from within the college who have received university-awarded prizes may also be recognised.
This year 48 students and staff received awards at a special ceremony in Devere Hall on 17 May 2022.
Awards included the Quercus College Scholarships, Quercus Academic Scholarship, The Peel Memorial Prize, Annual Student Nominated Staff, and Demonstrator Teaching Awards, and the SEFS Postgraduate Research Publications of the Year.
SEFS Graduate of the Year: David McMahon
David graduated with a BSc in Physics in 2021. He received the Oxford-Berman PhD scholarship to study Laser Wakefield Acceleration (LWFA) at the University of Oxford, where he is aiming to improve the quality of the output radiation of this technique, which will help shrink kilometre-long x-ray lasers down to tabletop-sized. He became very involved in student life, through the UCC Physics and Astronomy Society, and by co-founding the EPONA equal opportunities network to improve and expand equality, diversity, and inclusion in academic physics.
SEFS Graduate of the Year Runner Up: Eimear McKenna
Eimear graduated this past year with a BSc Geosciences, with one year spent at the University of Montana. Her thesis on the Geology of Carlingford Igneous Complex was awarded the Thorley Sweetman prize from the UCC School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and the Cunningham Award from the Geological Survey of Ireland. Currently she is working as a geophysical surveyor with Green Rebel, an Irish company headquartered in Cork that surveys the seafloor to enable the harnessing of offshore wind energy.
SEFS Graduate of the Year Runner Up: Robbie Matthews
Robbie is a recent graduate in BSc Applied Mathematics and Physics, currently working in financial services in London. His goal is to leverage his skills and qualities to lead his own company focused on doing good for the world, be it in cutting-edge cancer research or leveraging deep tech to create new revolutionary healthcare insights. Robbie is moving to the US in June 2022 to pursue an 11-month entrepreneurial master's program at the University of Notre Dame.
Congratulations to all the awardees! Please see the Awards webpage for further information.
