John Barrett and Michael O'Shea retire from the School of Engineering and Architecture

Congratulations to John Barrett, Senior Technical Officer, School of Engineering and Architecture, and Michael (Mick) O'Shea, Chief Technical Officer, School of Engineering and Architecture who have retired from UCC.
John and Mick have assisted generations of engineering students to reach their full potential and have contributed to many research success stories. They took enormous pride in their work and they will be greatly missed by their colleagues and the wider university community.
John Barrett was invovled in the maintenance of the computer and IT facilities associated with Process and Chemical Engineering. He was also responsible for the production of various multimedia devices for use in publicity and teaching within the school and in collaboration with other departments within UCC. John taught basic computer skills to first year students and gave tutorials in PE2004 (Technical Communication Skills). He was also involved in the running of laboratory practicals including demonstration and supervision of labs. John has a keen interest in programming and development, and developed many applications for use in teaching and research during his time at UCC.
Mick O'Shea joined UCC in spring of 1980. His wide knowledge, creative flair, and unsurpassed fabrication and trouble shooting skills were appreciated by students and staff alike. He was known as a “go to genius” who could solve any mechanical issues. He was extremely generous with his time, demonstrating care and empathy for struggling students. He often worked late into the evenings before project deadlines and brought the student along with him to make sure they got over the line. Mick's passion and pride in working as part of the university family has had a positive effect on all who worked with him.
We wish John and Mick the very best in their retirement and thank them for their hard work and dedication
