World Food Day: UCC makes a commitment to actions to address global hunger
UCC President Patrick O’Shea has signed the commitment “Presidents United to Solve Hunger” (PUSH) on behalf of UCC on World Food Day (16th October).
PUSH commits Universities to harness their skills and knowledge to find sustainable solutions to the critical global challenges of hunger and malnutrition. So far over 100 Universities worldwide have made this commitment, with UCC being the first Irish University to do so.
UCC has expertise across a wide range of relevant disciplines and themes that can contribute to addressing this global challenge, as well as the energy and commitment of students, many of whom are already engaged in finding innovative ways to promote a more just and sustainable world. UCC’s commitment is in line with the focus in its 2017-2022 Strategic Plan to adopt “an international outlook and informed and creative engagement on local and global issues.” It is particularly appropriate to sign this commitment on World Food Day which is dedicated to events signalling that a Zero Hunger world by 2030 is possible.
Present at the signing of the PUSH document was Dr Barbara Doyle of BEES who currently holds the presidency of the International Association for Plant Biotechnology (IAPB) and is a member of UCC's Center for Global Development. During the IAPB's recent congress held in Dublin, the issue of food security and our responses to it was one of the key topics discussed. BEES' degree streams including Applied Plant Biology and the newly-launched BSc in Agricultural Science both address the importance topic of food security.
