Sruthin Vijay Vijayakumar, MSc Applied Environmental Geoscience
Sruthin Vijay Vijayakumar is from India and is studying for his MSc in Applied Environmental Geoscience.
What made you choose Ireland and UCC, and how has the experience matched your expectations?
I chose Ireland and UCC because of the strong educational recognition, high standard of education, and the opportunities available after completing my studies. My course, Applied Environmental Geoscience, offered a well-balanced structure with a blend of theory, practicals, and fieldwork, which was very important to me. The course structure was excellent, and overall, my experience has matched my expectations.
How has your experience been settling into life in Ireland?
Initially, settling in was a bit challenging, especially when it came to meeting new people and adjusting to a different culture. However, over time, I began to notice a positive change in my interactions. The community is warm and welcoming, and as I became more involved in my everyday life, Ireland truly started to feel like home.
What has been the most positive or surprising part of studying and living in Ireland so far?
One of the most positive aspects has been the friendliness and openness of people. I was pleasantly surprised by how supportive both classmates, faculty members and foreign people are. The balance between academic focus and quality of life is also something I truly appreciate.
How is your experience studying here helping you grow personally and build confidence for your future career?
Studying here has helped me grow both personally and professionally. Being in an international environment has improved my communication skills, adaptability, and confidence. The academic challenges have pushed me to think critically and independently, which I believe are essential qualities for my future career.
What kinds of career support have been most valuable?
The most valuable career support I received came from the continuous guidance and internship and job advice provided by faculty members, as well as support from the Indian community in Ireland. The faculty at BEES were especially helpful in offering mock interviews, refining our CVs, and providing practical recommendations for interview preparation. These resources and mentorship played a key role in building my confidence and preparing me for job opportunities.
Tell us about one moment from your time here that makes you smile.
One moment that always makes me smile is participating in field trips and group activities with my classmates. As someone who is naturally introverted, I found myself gradually opening up—enjoying Irish humour, learning more about the culture, and listening to others share their experiences in Ireland. I also had the opportunity to attend events hosted by the Indian community here, where I met wonderful people and felt a strong sense of connection. These moments helped me grow personally and created memories I truly cherish.
What do you wish you had known before coming here?
I wish I had known how welcoming and supportive the environment would be. Knowing that it takes a little time to adjust, but that things truly do get better, would have been reassuring. I would tell future students to stay open-minded, get involved, and trust the process.
