Drug Use in Higher Education in Ireland Survey

On 30th of May, the Deputy President and Registrar, welcomed Minister Feighan T.D. Minister of State for Public Health, Wellbeing, and the National Drugs Strategy to a Town Hall event in the HUB, where the main findings of the Drug Use in Higher Education in Ireland (DUHEI) survey were presented. Student leaders, researchers, academics, and professionals from student services were joined by local and national experts in the area of drug use and addiction at UCC, to consider the findings and discuss the recommendations of the report.

The DUHEI results and recommendations were presented by Dr. Michael Byrne, Lead on the DUHEI Survey and Head of Student Health at UCC and Dr. Samantha Dockray, Senior Lecturer in Applied Psychology, UCC with contributions from other experts, including Professor Eamon Keenan, National Clinical Lead of HSE Addiction Services and Professor of Public Health & Primary Care (TCD).  The panel of discussants also included student representatives, the report authors, and local and national experts in the area of drug use and addiction.

The DUHEI report highlights the need to address the issue of drug use amongst students in Ireland and provides the data essential for the implementation of the Framework for Response to the Use of Illicit Substances within Higher Education.
