Congratulations to Aoife Slyne, PhD trainee, who was presented with a Rob Clarke Award at The Physiological Society’s 2021 President’s Lecture and Awards Evening, held at The Royal Society, London.

Prof. Ken O’Halloran delivered a talk at the 4^th Neural Control of Breathing Meeting, a virtual satellite meeting of the 56^th Annual Congress of the Brazilian Physiological Society (SBFis), October 15 2021.

The European Young Physiologists’ Symposium (EYPS) took place at the European Physiology Day virtual meeting held by the Federation of European Physiological Societies on the 12^th of October 2021.

Dr. John Mackrill presented a 3 minute talk and an ePoster at The Physiological Society’s meeting on “New Roles for Ion Channels and Transporters in Health and Disease” this September. 

Ms. Alana Cutliffe begins an Irish Research Council (IRC)-funded PhD project on oesophageal cancer, under the supervision of Dr. John Mackrill (Department of Physiology) and Dr. Sharon McKenna (Cork Cancer Research Centre) this September. This project is funded by the IRC Enterprise Partnership Scheme. The title of this grant is: “The Examination of the Effects of Acid-Exposure on Oesophageal-Cancer Cells: Examining its Effects on Calcium (Ca²⁺) Signals which Promote Cancer Growth”. 

Aoife Slyne, PhD trainee & Lilly Scholar, presented an oral communication this week at Future Physiology 2021, a meeting of The Physiological Society.

This Spring, the Department of Physiology is hosting a number of alumni and friends of the BSc Physiology degree programme.

The Biomedical Section of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland (RAMI) meeting took place virtually on the 3^rd February 2021. The meeting was organised by Dr. Katherine Howell (Section President) and Dr. Jeffery Glennon (Section Secretary), University College Dublin (UCD).

PhD trainee Aoife Slyne represented the Department of Physiology at the New Horizons in Medical Research Conference on the 3^rd of December 2020.
