Recent Graduate News
16 Dec 2013Dr. Katrin Kaschig graduated in November 2013 with her PhD entitled Zinc Finger Nuclease gene repair as a treatment for cystinosis. .
On 10th December 2013, Dr. Jennifer Hollwood successfully defended her PhD thesis entitled Cystic Fibrosis gene repair: Correction of ΔF508 using ZFN and CRISPR/Cas9 gRNA gene editing tools.
Dr Julie O Neill successfully defended her PhD thesis on the 12th of December entitled ' The role played by Angiotensin (1-7) in the regulation of renal haemodynamics and renal excretory function in anesthetized rats.
Dr Niamh Goulding also successfully defended her PhD thesis on the 20th of December. The title of Niamh's thesis is: 'Renal Failure and the Neurol Control of the Kidney.

Prizes in Physiology
16 Dec 2013Congratulations to Siobhan Rafferty and Alexandra Brito who were awarded the H.H. Stewart scholarship and 2nd prize in Physiology respectively at a recent awards event hosted by the National University of Ireland.The competition is open to medical students from the major institutions in Ireland. Siobhan and Alexandra were presented with scrolls by Professor Ken O'Halloran at the School of Medicine awards day recently...

Nora O'Donovan being presented with her 35 year award by Registrar Prof.Paul Giller
09 Dec 2013Congratulations to Ms. Nora O'Donovan who was presented with an award for 35 years' service to UCC. Nora received her award from the Registrar, Prof. Paul Giller at a reception dinner hosted by UCC HR in the Aula Maxima. Prof. O'Halloran joined Nora and her husband at the awards night to celebrate this remarkable contribution to UCC and the Department of Physiology. Here's to many more years!

Sleep & Breathing International Symposium
15 Nov 2013Professor Ken O’Halloran and 4 PhD students in his group are invited to the 13th Sleep & Breathing International Symposium which takes place in Montreal Canada in October 2013. Five papers submitted by the group have been selected for oral communication at the conference. The studies explore cardiorespiratory remodelling in translational models of chronic sustained and intermittent hypoxia.

2nd Generation Cystic Fibrosis Gene Repair
15 Nov 2013Dr Patrick Harrison has been awarded a research grant from CF trust UK for a one year study entitled 2nd generation Cystic fibrosis gene repair starting 1st October.
Together with his colleague Dr Martina Scanlon and three PhD students,their group was the first to correct the most common CF-causing mutation in the human cell line (Lee et al,2012)
Dr Jennifer Hollywood is also using a ground breaking technigue to advance their work known as CRISPR/Cas9 g RNA gene editing.
