Gabriel Doherty (1967-2024)

11 Nov 2024

The School of History is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of our colleague, Gabriel Doherty. Gabriel was a much-loved colleague and friend who dedicated his life to teaching generations of students at UCC.  All in the School recognise and appreciate his extraordinary generosity in the support he gave to teaching and examining.

As Examinations Officer for the History Department, he played a vital role in the managing the exhausting schedule around the exam boards, processing results, liaising with External Examiners and, above all, in the encouragement and practical support he gave to students. This service to the University he delivered in his typically self-effacing and understated way.

The focus of Gabriel’s research and teaching was the history of Ireland in the twentieth century, especially the Revolutionary period and the History of Northern Ireland. His published works mark a decisive contribution to the histories of Home Rule in Ireland, the Easter Rising, and War of Independence. He played a central part in the government's Decade of Centenaries advisory committee that commemorated the events of 1913-23. His role in commemorating lesser-known figures and in exploring the local histories of that transformative decade ensured that the focus of attention was not the grand narrative of nation building, but the impact that major historical shifts had on how people lived their lives.

Gabriel was born in Birmingham in 1967 into a family that was deeply committed to social equality and the Trade Union movement. That formation led him to develop a strong social consciousness in his publications, teaching, and research, especially in his work on the Irish criminal justice system. His research reached a wide audience through the academic press, but also in his presentations to local historical societies where his depth of knowledge and passion for his subject were appreciated. His connection to Birmingham was also manifested in the more niche activity of his support for Birmingham City football club.

Admired as a man of faith, immense integrity, and commitment to the University’s teaching mission, Gabriel’s contribution will be remembered with gratitude and its loss sorely felt.

The whole UCC community is united with us in the School of History in expressing our sorrow at Gabriel’s loss to his wife Gillian, children Méabh, Oscar and Úna and wider family and friends.

A book of Condolence is now open for signing in the Ground Floor Front Office (right hand side), Tyrconnell House.
