30th Anniversary Reflections on J.J. Lee’s Ireland, 1912-1985: Politics and Society

14 Feb 2019

The School of History at UCC is delighted to support this anniversary celebration of Prof J.J. Lee's ground-breaking magnum opus, Ireland 1912-1985: Politics and Society

Joe Lee has a long association with History at UCC, having served as Professor of Modern History from 1974-92, and then as Chair of the Combined Departments of History until 2002. In that time he not only delighted and educated generations of students with his wit and wisdom, but engaged in debates and discussion in the media as a public intellectual. Ireland 1912-85 is a classic work of engaged history – an argument for the relevance of the discipline to public debate about the state of nation, as well as a treasure trove of research, analysis and insight that revealed the historical roots of the crisis of the 1980s for a broad audience. Having returned from a successful tenure at New York University, Joe Lee continues to engage and educate at a range of fora across Ireland. Long may he continue to do so.
