Notice to announce the appointment of Dr David Fitzgerald as Lecturer in International Politics.

Professor Geoffrey Roberts, Head of the School of History, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr David Fitzgerald, Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Clinton Institute at UCD, to the Lectureship in International Politics in Cork. A former NYU Glucksman scholar, Dr Fitzgerald completed his PhD in history at the School of History, UCC under the supervision of Prof David Ryan. His thesis was entitled “Learning to Forget?  US Army Counterinsurgency Doctrine from Vietnam to Iraq”.

Dr David Fitzgerald’s research and teaching interests include US foreign policy, military and cultural history -- specifically the relationship between the US military and American society and culture. His work also deals with the intersections of history and memory as well as how societies and institutions construct usable pasts.

Dr Fitzgerald is currently preparing a book monograph, based on his doctoral work on how the US Army's experiences during -- and memories of -- the Vietnam War shaped its subsequent attitudes towards counterinsurgency warfare. Other projects include a co-authored monograph on the historical context of Obama's foreign policy and a study of the US Army's post-Vietnam interest in the Wehrmacht of World War II and a chapter in an upcoming edited volume exploring war and American identity.

The School of History sincerely congratulates David on his appointment and warmly welcomes him back to University College Cork.
