FUIAM Lecture: Dr Ann-Marie Hanlon

24 Nov 2022

"Gendered Experiences of the Irish Music Industry"

Short Abstract

Gendered Experiences of the Irish Music Industry is the first national study to investigate the potential impact of gender on artists experiences within the Irish music industry. In July 2021, while government restrictions prohibited most public performances, over 530 musicians participated in the study via an online survey and shared their experiences in relation to a range of topics. These include getting started in a music career; live performance; recording; securing gigs and festival slots in Ireland; achieving airplay for their music in Ireland; the impact of being a parent/guardian or carer; and engagement with gender equality initiatives in Ireland. Participants comprise men (50%), women (44%) and non-binary (6%) participants of diverse ages who work in a range of musical genres. In this talk, Dr Ann-Marie Hanlon will outline how this mixed method study was conducted and share some initial findings in advance of its official launch in February 2023.
