Congratulations Dr André Toulouse receives a 2020 National Teaching Hero Award

Dr André  Toulouse, a Lecturer of Anatomy and Principal Investigator in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, was nominated for this award by one of his many students in Medicine, Dentistry, Clinical Therapies, Neuroscience and Research Programmes for his outstanding teaching skills and ongoing dedication and support to his students.

Dr Toulouse said that he is 'honoured to be nominated and is delighted to receive this acknowledgement from his students'. 'Teaching is the fun part of his work' he says and he is constantly looking at new methods and technologies to enhance and engage the student experience. To date Dr Toulouse has developed and assessed a number of educational tools such as animations, online resources, 3D computer models to supplement teaching and consolidate learning in the areas of Dental Anatomy and Neuroanatomy.

In addition to his teaching and research activities Dr Toulouse is Director of the Biosciences Imaging Centre, an advanced microscopy facility, at University College Cork, and in 2020 he was appointed third year coordinator of the BSc Neuroscience degree programme.

The Awards are organised by the National Forum in collaboration with the Union of Students in Ireland and other students’ unions nationwide. They provide an opportunity for students across the country to recognise and celebrate outstanding teaching in our higher education institutions. Teaching Heroes are nominated by individual students, who submit a short personal piece that explains why their ‘Teaching Hero’ deserves recognition as an innovative or inspiring teacher.
