The Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience was delighted to welcome students to the  Anatomy and Neuroscience for Transition Year students two day course which took place on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th May 2024.

The two-day course run by staff in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience explored the structure and function of the human body at multiple levels. The structure of the normal body and function was presented, and the effects of different factors (including disease, lifestyle habits such as alcohol use and smoking, etc) on these structures wad examined and discussed.

The two day course returned this year, after a break due to Covid restrictions, with a great interest from Transition Year students. The course was delivered by staff as a series of tutorials, small group learning, and dissection-based learning. Laboratory sessions focused on demonstrating gross anatomy. Students also gained some research laboratory experience, and had the opportunity to observe neuroscience researchers at work. Students also viewed cellular anatomy (histology) using microscopes.

The course also included a short careers workshop, with lightning talks from staff and postgraduate students, who discussed the varied and interesting paths they took to their current roles in medicine and the biological sciences.

The course organiser Dr Sue Grenham thanked all of the staff involved in delivering the 2024 course including, Carrie O'Flynn, Mike Cronin, Ashley Benge, Wayne Sheehan, Max Shanahan, Tara Foley and Gerry Moloney.
