Dr. Shane Hegarty awarded National University of Ireland ‘Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Sciences’
Congratulations to Dr. Shane Hegarty, Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, on the award of the National University of Ireland ‘Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Sciences’.
Dr. Shane Hegarty was awarded this prestigious NUI-funded post-doctoral research fellowship at the Annual NUI Awards Ceremony (http://www.nui.ie/images/news/2014/awards2014_Flash/index.asp).
Shane commenced the fellowship on the 1st of October 2015. The project, supervised by Dr. Gerard O’Keeffe and Professor Aideen Sullivan, will explore a new molecular mechanism which they have identified that controls the growth and survival of dopamine neurons, the cells which die to cause Parkinson’s disease. By identifying the mechanisms that control dopamine neuron development, and how these mechanisms potentially change during aging and/or disease, they aim to develop new therapies for promoting the survival and growth of dopamine neurons in Parkinson’s disease.
