Specific Purpose Whole-time Post

UCC wishes to appoint an experienced academic to the role of Lecturer in Anatomy & Neuroscience. The post-holder shall teach and examine, establish and maintain a competitive Neuroscience research programme, undertake administrative duties and carry out other duties appropriate to the post under the general direction of the Head of the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience.

The Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience (http://www.ucc.ie/en/anatomy) is a member of the School of Medicine within the College of Medicine and Health at University College Cork. The Department teaches in the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Therapies, Nursing and Pharmacy, and in the College of Science Engineering and Food Science (SEFS), in which it has a strong undergraduate Neuroscience BSc degree programme. This post-holder will be focused on teaching the BSc in Medical and Health Sciences, a new multidisciplinary, research-led degree programme, which will have its first student intake in 2018 (https://www.ucc.ie/en/ck707).

The Department has teaching and research facilities in the Biosciences Institute and the Western Gateway Building, including the new Neuroscience Hub. This new state of the art facility offers huge potential for further development of teaching and research in the Department. Indeed, Neuroscience is a growing area within UCC and the Cork Neuroscience Centre http://www.ucc.ie/en/cns has recently been designated as a Centre of Excellence in Neurodegeneration (CoEN). Research strengths within the Department include stress neurobiology, brain-gut communication, neuro-inflammation, neurodegeneration, cognitive neuroscience and the developing or ageing brain.

We are particularly interested in candidates with high-impact, internationally recognised research programmes that may intersect with ongoing Departmental interests and/or the neuroscience research within the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centres of the College of Medicine & Health: The APC Microbiome Institute http://www.ucc.ie/research/apc/content/ and INFANT http://www.infantcentre.ie. Candidates should have a track record to be competitive for applying to the European Research Council or similar Investigator Programmes for research funding.

Please note that Garda vetting and/or an international police clearance check may form part of the selection process.

For an information package including full details of the post, selection criteria and application process see www.ucc.ie/hr/vacancies. The University, at its discretion, may undertake to make an additional appointment(s) from this competition following the conclusion of the process.
