UCC Welcomes New Cohorts to MSc Biotechnology and MSc Advanced Cell and Gene Therapy Programmes
The School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology is delighted to welcome the 2026-2027 cohorts of the MSc Biotechnology and MSc Advanced Cell and Gene Therapy programmes.
Students were welcomed to campus this week by Programme Directors Dr Ken Nally and Dr Ciaran Lee as they begin their postgraduate studies in two of UCC's industry-connected programmes, designed to equip graduates with the skills and experience needed for careers across the rapidly evolving biopharmaceutical sector.
Both programmes have been developed in close collaboration with industry partners, ensuring students gain an up-to-date understanding of the latest scientific advances and manufacturing technologies shaping the future of healthcare.
The MSc Biotechnology, one of UCC's longest-established and most respected industry-focused postgraduate programmes, provides students with a comprehensive understanding of modern biotechnology, with a focus on the development and manufacture of small and large molecule medicines, including biologics.

MSc Advanced Cell and Gene Therapy Class of 2026-27
The MSc Advanced Cell and Gene Therapy is one of UCC's newest postgraduate offerings, and prepares graduates for careers in the development and manufacture of advanced therapeutic medicinal products (ATMPs), including cell therapies, gene therapies, mRNA-based medicines and novel vaccines.
Throughout the year, students on both programmes will benefit from a rich learning experience that extends beyond the lecture theatre, including:
- Advanced laboratory-based training
- Teamwork and professional development opportunities
- Career workshops and expert guest lecture series
- Industry site visits
A key feature of both programmes is the opportunity to undertake a six-month research project or industry placement, providing students with valuable hands-on experience and the chance to apply their knowledge in real-world settings.
These experiences have consistently delivered strong outcomes for graduates. The MSc Biotechnology programme has a proven track record of success, with approximately 90% of graduates progressing directly into industry roles and 10% continuing to PhD study around the world.
