Prof. Emanuel Popovici announced as Qualcomm Professor in Digital Electronics and Embedded Systems at UCC
Professor Emanuel Popovici has been announced as the new Qualcomm Professor in Digital Electronics and Embedded Systems — a landmark appointment that strengthens the long-standing collaboration between University College Cork (UCC) and Qualcomm.
This strategic professorship reflects a shared commitment to advancing research, innovation, and industry‑aligned education at a time when Ireland faces growing demand for expertise in electronics and microelectronics.
Qualcomm’s philanthropic support, delivered through Cork University Foundation and UCC Advancement, is enabling UCC to expand academic excellence, upgrade key research facilities, and prepare graduates for a rapidly evolving digital and semiconductor landscape.
In his new role, Professor Popovici will lead teaching and learning across electrical and electronic engineering programmes, nurturing critical thinking, problem‑solving, and work‑ready skills in the next generation of engineers.
Professor Popovici said: “It is an honour to build on the legacy of George Boole, UCC’s first Professor of Mathematics and the father of digital logic, by advancing human progress in partnership with Qualcomm, a global digital technology leader whose innovations have transformed society.”
This investment strengthens Ireland’s high‑tech ecosystem, enhances national competitiveness, and reinforces UCC and Qualcomm’s shared commitment to STEM advancement, outreach, and public engagement.
This professorship marks a significant milestone, enhancing UCC’s culture of academic excellence while reinforcing Ireland’s position as a global leader in high‑tech research and development.
