Dr Vahid Aryanpur appointed Lead Author for Working Group of IPCC Seventh Climate Assessment Report

25 Aug 2025

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has appointed Dr Vahid Aryanpur (School of Engineering & Architecture/UCC Sustainability Institute) as a Lead Author for Working Group III of its Seventh Assessment Report (AR7).

Working Group III focuses on climate change mitigation, assessing methods for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.

Experts selected from over 3,700 nominations, will begin drafting reports based on outlines agreed upon during the IPCC’s 62nd session in Hangzhou, China, earlier this year.

The AR7 cycle, which began in July 2023, will culminate in a Synthesis Report by late 2029. In addition to the core Working Group reports, the IPCC will produce a Special Report on Climate Change and Cities (due March 2027), a Methodology Report on Short-lived Climate Forcers, and a new report on Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies.

Dr Vahid Aryanpur said: "I have been appointed as a Lead Author of the Working Group III contribution to the IPCC’s Seventh Assessment Report (AR7), focusing on Chapter 11: Transport and mobility services and systems. This chapter will examine mitigation options and strategies for passenger and freight transport. It will also highlight the importance of combining demand management solutions with new technologies across all modes of transport—from private cars and trucks to aviation and shipping".

This cycle builds on the Sixth Assessment Report, completed in 2023, which informed global climate negotiations at COP28. The IPCC continues to play a vital role in shaping climate policy by providing rigorous, peer-reviewed scientific assessments.
