A unique engineering event overseen by staff from the School of Engineering and Architecture, UCC and students from the Engineers without Borders Society took place in the Student Hub recently.

Despite the challenges of Covid-19, over the past number of months six teams of students from secondary schools around Munster (Christ King Cork, Christian Brothers School Charleville, Colaiste Daibhead, SMGS Blarney, St Colman’s College Fermoy, Christian Brothers School Cork) worked hard and presented their projects at the grand final of the FIRST Lego League on 8 May.

Some exceptional engineering work in terms of robot design and programming, and solving the 'Cargo Connect' challenge, were displayed by the fantastic teams. Important core engineering skills, a research project and exceptional team work complemented a fun, engaging day filled with amazing prizes.

The competition was opened by Professor Sarah Culloty, Head of the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science, followed by introductions from Dr Emanuel Popovici, School of Engineering and Architecture, UCC and Ethan Hussey from the Engineers without Borders society (EWB).

Rose Delaney from the EWB Society commented:

"We were delighted to be part of the FIRST Lego League. Inspiring future engineers and scientists is at the heart of EWBs mission as we strive to build a more sustainable future for all. Events such as this one allow young students to experience what it is like to be an engineer in a very enjoyable way."

Dr. Emanuel Popovici, School of Engineering and Architecture, SFI MaREI Centre, and Insight Centre for Data Analytics added:

“It was a fantastic engineering event in the Student Hub, bursting with energy and filled with fun and also great prizes. Many thanks to Qualcomm (the main sponsors) and their staff volunteers, thank you to LearnIT for some outstanding workshops and the final show, and mostly to the inspiring student teams from across Cork/Munster who displayed an exhibition like no other. Engineering is fun! Engineering has a great future with these students!”
