University College Cork seeks to recruit a Senior Lecturer in Plant Genetics within the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (School of BEES) to provide strong research and academic leadership. Research experience in grass genetics/genomics or grass breeding, in addition to research that can be applied in Irish agriculture systems, would be a particular advantage. However, an academic background in any area of plant genetics that could be applied to grassland research will be considered, with the aim of developing a research cluster in this area. The appointee will be expected to contribute strategically to the University’s sustainability agenda, particularly in the area of sustainable agriculture, and play a role in the Environmental Research Institute with which the School of BEES is closely associated.

 

The School of BEES, within the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS), comprises the academic disciplines of Plant Science, Geology, Environmental Science, Zoology and Ecology. The School currently offers nine undergraduate programmes, one taught MSc programme, two MRes programmes, one postgraduate diploma and three full- and part-time undergraduate diplomas. It is anticipated that the Senior Lecturer in Plant Genetics will lead an innovative research programme in the School and provide a leadership role in the development of relevant new courses.

 

The successful candidate will be expected to have a PhD in Plant Science, Genetics or a relevant area and demonstrate a proven commitment to leadership and excellence in teaching and research as evidenced by a scholarly reputation of international standing.  S/he is expected to have a strong track record of sustained peer-reviewed publications and will have a record of fostering a culture of teaching and research excellence. It is expected that the candidate will also have experience of leading research programmes. S/he is expected to take a leadership role in the School in the area of plant genetics and develop collaborations with the agriculture sector, associated stakeholders and research partners.

 

Appointment will be made on the Senior Lectureship Salary Scale (€65,000 – €88,519). In all instances the successful appointment will be at the first point of the scale.
