Danna Gabriela Dumas Martinez, MSc Food Science
Danna Gabriela Dumas Martinez is from Mexico and is studying for a Masters in Food Science at UCC.
How has your experience been settling into life in Ireland, especially in terms of community, culture, and feeling at home?
Settling into life in Ireland has been a completely new experience for me. The first few months were challenging as I tried to adjust to a new environment, a new country, and meeting new people. However, meeting others who were in similar situations helped me a lot and made the transition easier. Over time, these connections helped me feel more comfortable and develop a sense of belonging.
What has been the most positive or surprising part of studying and living in Ireland so far?
One of the most positive aspects of studying and living in Ireland has been the quality of the lectures and the passion of the lecturers. Their enthusiasm and dedication to their subjects make the learning experience engaging and inspiring.
How is your experience studying here helping you grow personally and build the confidence you need as you plan your future career?
Studying here has helped me learn more about myself, including my strengths and areas where I can improve. It has allowed me to develop more confidence in myself, both personally and professionally, and has helped me better understand the direction I want to take in my future career.
What kinds of career support, such as internships, industry connections, or guidance from the careers team, have been most valuable during your time here?
Although I have not had the opportunity to complete an internship or establish industry connections yet, the guidance provided by the careers team has been very valuable. The support they offer with CV preparation and the information about potential opportunities after completing the master’s program have helped me start creating a clearer career path and plan for the future.
What do you wish you had known before coming here that would reassure or excite future students?
I wish I had known that although there are many new experiences and challenges to overcome, nothing is impossible. The university provides many resources and support services that can help students adapt, succeed, and make the most of their experience.
