University College Cork (UCC) researchers have been awarded a combined €2m for separate projects that will find novel solutions to monitor patients with inflammatory kidney disease and better understand how social determinants affect suicidal behaviours.

APC discovers that gut microbes play a key role in regulating stress responsiveness throughout the day
05 Nov 2024A pioneering study has uncovered the vital role that gut microbiota plays in regulating stress responses by interacting with the body’s circadian rhythms.
The findings open the door for developing new microbial-based therapies that could help individuals better manage stress related mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression which are often associated with alterations in circadian and sleep cycles.

4 in 5 Pregnant Women in Ireland are Iron Deficient by Third Trimester, a research study reveals
26 Sep 2024Four out of five pregnant women in Ireland are iron deficient by their third trimester, a University College Cork (UCC) study reveals. Researchers at the Irish Centre for Maternal and Child Health (INFANT) and School of Food and Nutritional Sciences in UCC have shown that over 80% of women are iron deficient by their third trimester.

New approach to milk allergies promises breakthrough
19 Sep 2024- Study shows that using a novel advancement therapy called the “Milk Ladder”, was almost four times more likely to be successful in safely reintroducing cow’s milk to children with milk allergies in comparison to other classic approaches used in other countries.

UCC and St Patrick’s Mental Health Services announce strategic partnership to enhance pharmacy-related research and clinical collaborations

UCC researcher to lead project on food related inequality across Europe
13 Jun 2024- FOODPATH is an initiative dedicated to identifying and addressing the determinants of food-related inequalities in Europe.
- The €1.6 million project includes partners from six European countries and is led by Dr Janas Harrington in the School of Public Health at UCC.
- FOODPATH will provide the necessary structural changes to ensure all European citizens, regardless of socioeconomic status, can make healthier food choices.

Excellence in research and innovation celebrated at UCC awards
30 May 2024One of the top 10 Food Scientists in the world, researchers in the area of dementia palliative care, and the team behind the development and delivery of bespoke in person Sexual Ethics and Respectful Relationships training to personnel of the Irish Defence Forces across the country, were among the awardees to have their contributions to research and innovation honoured at the 2023 University College Cork Research and Innovation Awards, held at Devere Hall on Wednesday, May 29th.
