Showcase of Doctoral Bursary Awardees

Graduate Studies in the College of Medicine and Health award up to 10 Doctoral Bursaries to CoMH students registered for a doctoral degree (PhD/MD/Doctorate), to cover activities taking place in the academic year. 

The purpose of these awards is twofold: 

  1. To facilitate students who wish to present their work at an international conference. 
  1. To facilitate the training of students who wish to acquire skills that are essential for their academic development, but which they cannot otherwise receive in UCC.

CoMH Student applicants can apply for: 

  • up to €1000 in financial support that may be used towards the cost of travel, accommodation and registration fees for relevant conferences or training courses [Travel Bursary].or
  • up to €500 in financial support that may be used towards the registration fees for relevant online participation at conferences or training courses [Registration Bursary].

 

Bright Futures is delighted to showcase the work of five of the Doctoral Bursary awardees 2023 who will present their work in a 5 minute presentations. 

This event has been organised by Dr Declan Millett and Elisabeth Oluwaseyi Bodunde, and Chaired by Dr Collette Hand.

  • Aileen Callanan, PhD student in the School of Public Health, UCC, was awarded a Travel Bursary to attend the World Organization of Family Doctors WONCA Europe Conference, 28th June-1st July 2022.  Aileen will present a 5 minute presentation on PhD work: The Potential Impact of Atrial Fibrillation Screening in Ireland.

    Supervisors: Dr Claire Buckley, Dr Colin Bradely, Professor Patrcia Kearney and advisor Dr Diarmuid Quinlan.

                          

  • Niamh Coffey,  Clinical Fellow in Restorative Dentistry/PhD student, Cork University Dental School and Hospital, was awarded a Travel Bursary to attend the Pan-European Region of the International Association for Dental Research Oral Health Research Congress, September 14th, 2022.     Niamh's will present a 5 minute presentation on PhD work: Periodontal Disease Prevalence and Oral Hygiene Practices in Adults with Cystic Fibrosis.

  • Ayat Elgammal, PhD student in the School of Pharmacy, UCC was awarded a Travel Bursary to attend the Prescribing and Research in Medicines Management (PRIMM) UK & Ireland, June 2022. Ayat will present a 5 minute presentation on PhD work: Assessment of oral liquid antibiotic formulations with the focus on organoleptic properties that impact paediatric acceptability.

  • Sinéad Horgan, PhD student in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCC was awarded a Travel Bursary to attend the Federation of Infection Societies Conference, September 2022.   Sinead will present a 5 minute presentation on PhD work:  The impact of a quality improvement complex intervention on the incidences of surgical site infection and the knowledge and attitudes of healthcare professionals

  • Supervisors  Professor Josephine Hegarty, School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCC, Professor Jonathan Drennan, School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCD. Dr Mohamad Saab, School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCC since April 2022.          

  • Raminder Singh, PhD student in the Department of Medicine, UCC was awarded a Travel Bursary to attend the European Molecular Biology Organization EMBO Conference, July 2022. Raminder will present a 5 minute presentation on PhD work: Identification of Bacteria-Regulated Mechanisms for the Pathogenesis of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) and Development of Upconverting nanoparticle (UCNP) Luminescence Imaging for the Monitoring of Gut Bacteria.

The Programme 

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral programme in the College of Medicine and Health and must be registered students at the time of registration for the conference/course for which they are planning to attend.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a need to attend the conference/course.
  • Applications will be assessed by the CoMH Graduate Studies Committee. Priority will be given to applicants:
    • with no other means of support for attending conferences/courses
    • in the later stages of their doctoral degree
    • who have not already participated at a conference/course
    • who can provide evidence that their work has already been submitted, and ideally also accepted, for presentation at a conference
  • Consideration will be given to:
    • applications from early-stage students who wish to attend courses that develop essential skills not available in UCC
    • whether the applicant has previously received funding from the scheme
