Climate crisis: How states may be held responsible for impact on children
Writing for The Conversation, UCC School of Law's Dr Aoife Daly comments on the recent UN Committee on the Rights of the Child climate case, which determined that a government can, in theory, be held to account for the impact its country’s carbon emissions have on its children, both within and outside of its borders.
However, Dr Daly argues, the youth climate activists who filed the complaint are right to be disappointed with the outcome of the case, as the committee ruled on a theoretical level and failed to engage with their specific claims.
