Family Law Clinic
The work of the Clinic:
Under the guidance of the Clinic Director Professor Louise Crowley, the UCC School of Law Family Law Clinic provides LLM students with the unique opportunity to engage with family law in practice, through providing the following supports:
- Maintenance and updating of the award-winning Clinic online Family Law information hub www.familylawinformation.ie
- Support lawyers through conducting research in respect of the litigation of issues relating to family formations, domestic violence, relationship breakdown and associated inter parte- responsibilities.
- Inform and assist the work of relevant organisations and NGOs through provision of research and related supports.
- Promote evidence-based reform proposals and submissions in all areas of Irish family law.
- Provide students with an insight into the law in practice, and in particular, practical experience of family law and litigation.
Family Law information hub
familylawinformation.ie operates as an information portal, providing a central source of information related to family relationships and a comprehensive online source of all aspects of Irish family law. It serves to inform the general public and service providers of all relevant existing, validated sources of information that are currently accessible both on and offline. The aim is to collate and better convey existing information, resources and services in Ireland, thereby ensuring that anyone seeking information will be able to access all related sources.
The website, an initiative of the Family Law Clinic at the School of Law, was developed by Professor Louise Crowley, and is moderated and supported by students of the LLM (Children’s Rights and Family Law). The primary aim of this project is to provide those in need of information relating to aspects of Irish family law, with a comprehensive and up-to-date statement of the law and identification of relevant supports and services.
The development of the website was generously funded by an Irish Research Council New Foundations Award 2014.
Research support for legal practitioners.
- The Family Law Clinic at University College Cork is a pro-bono legal research service.
- It is provided for lawyers by the students of the LLM Children's Rights and Family Law.
- The Clinic aims to enhance and support the quality of litigation in family law cases
The Clinic does not provide legal advice to individuals but rather support lawyers to represent and litigate on these issues. It also aims to provide legal support to organisations working with individuals and families.
Family Law Blog
Students of the Family Law Clinic contribute a short novel blog on a topical issue of family law of their choosing. Once assessed and approved, these blogs are posted on the Family Law Clinic Information website.
