FUAIM Concert: Donal 'Doc' Gleeson Awards, 25th March 1.10pm, Aula Maxima

THE DÓNAL ‘DÓC’ GLEESON INSTRUMENTAL TUITION AWARDS. FUAIM is very proud to present the winners of this year's Dónal ‘Doc’ Gleeson Awards for outstanding undergraduate performance. They are 2nd-year students Gobnait Kiely and Pádraig Enright and 3rd-year students Luke Maziarek and Rachel Browne.

In memory of their colleague, Dónal Gleeson, the Dublin Postal Clerks Branch of the Communication Workers' Union has established a fund to enable the University to provide a number of Instrumental Tuition Awards. Up to four awards are made each year to deserving undergraduate music students. This week's Friday lunchtime concert will feature four short performances by Gobnait, Pádraig, Luke and Rachel, featuring Irish traditional and popular instrumental and vocal music.

 

RACHEL BROWNE – voice

 

Rachel is a final year student studying Music and Irish. Over the last few years, performing has become a big part of her life, especially in the genres of pop and musical theatre. Rachel has performed in many concerts and musicals over the years, such as “Grease” and “All Shook Up” as well as playing the leading roles of Eponine in “Les Mis” and Deloris Van Cartier in “Sister Act.” Rachel is delighted to be back rehearsing and performing live with other students this academic year for the first time since the pandemic began and is truly grateful for this amazing experience.

PÁDRAIG ENRIGHT – flute

 

Padraig is from Listowel Co. Kerry and he has been playing Irish traditional music since childhood. He plays a variety of instruments, mainly flute, tin whistle and bodhrán. Currently a 2nd-year student of Music and Asian Studies, he is an All-Ireland champion in the tin whistle slow airs competition in the Fleadh Cheoil. He has also toured with various Irish dancing shows as a band member, including Spirit of Ireland and Celtic Steps. With Spirit of Ireland he has toured Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and the Isle of Wight. He is a full-time member of Turas in Siamsa Tíre Tralee, the Irish national folk theatre. He performs regularly with Fuinneamh a 6-piece band based in the Sliabh Luachra region.

 

Pádraig will perform a selection of solo reels, jigs, slip jigs and slow airs.

 

 

GOBNAIT KIELY – concertina

 

Gobnait Kiely is a second-year Music and Irish student from Béal na Bláth, Co. Cork. Gobnait is primarily a concertina player but she also sings and plays piano and tin whistle. She began learning the tin whistle at the age of six in her local Comhaltas and took up the concertina and piano soon after. She has been performing at formal & informal events ever since and also teaches concertina in the Lee Valley School of Music, Macroom.

 

Gobnait will perform a solo set of traditional tunes on concertina for this week's concert.

 

 

LUKE MAZIAREK – voice

 

Luke is in his final year studying Theatre with Music in UCC. Luke has always had an affinity for performing and is heavily involved in musical theatre. As a singer and aspiring artist, he is influenced by indie pop vocalists like Lana Del Rey and Phoebe Bridgers as well as iconic artists like Roberta Flack. He has performed in several UCC Musical Theatre Society productions and has played the lead male role in both Legally Blonde and 9 to 5. Luke hopes to continue to make music in any way he can after he graduates.

 

This performance will include pop and indie pop music and Luke will be joined by his pop ensemble bandmates on stage.
