Seminar: Research Ethics in Teaching and Learning

The ethical treatment of participants is one of the most important considerations for any researcher. For those hoping to conduct research on their teaching, the particular ethical considerations unique to research in Teaching and Learning may be new to many.
The CIRTL seminar which will be held at 12.30pm on Thursday 12th October, will allow participants to consider ethical processes when documenting and sharing what goes on in the classroom.
As Chair of the UCC Social Research Ethics Committee (SREC), Dr Mike Murphy will provide an overview of ethical standards within UCC, and will outline the process researchers must adhere to when applying for SREC approval. Mike will provide an overview of the major foci of an SREC application, and will outline tips and tricks for ensuring a successful application. CIRTL’s Research Support Officer, Dr Laura Lee, will invite participants to consider the particular ethical considerations they may face in research on Teaching and Learning. Laura will provide participants with key ethical considerations when designing Teaching and Learning research, and will outline strategies for ethical practice.
It is hoped that this seminar will allow participants to reflect on how they may mitigate potential harm to research participants, and create an opportunity for researchers to reflect on the values that guide their work.
A light lunch will be provided to participants in the seminar. Please confirm your attendance by emailing Catherine O’Mahony, e:catherine.omahony@ucc.ie
Participants in the CIRTL Seminar series will be invited to gain a certificate of participation through UCC’s CPD Centre.
