International focus on embedding research-based education

3 Jul 2017
Connecting Higher Education conference, June 2017

An international conference focused on embedding research in the undergraduate curriculum took place in London last week. It ran over 3 days and attracted more than 300 delegates. The conference was co-organised by University College London, the University of Adelaide and McMaster University, all of whom have a particular interest and expertise in growing curriculum-wide approaches to research-based education.

UCC staff presented on two different areas of work. Dr Catherine O'Mahony, CIRTL, and Aonghus Sugrue, Systems Administration, presented on a curriculum analytics project which uncovered evidence of research and inquiry in the undergraduate curriculum. This project provides a baseline for research-based education activities in UCC and the methodology shared in the paper was of particular interest to attendees, many of whom are grappling with the same questions.

Dr O'Mahony also coordinated a symposium which brought together three different H2020 projects that are focused on embedding responsible research and innovation in Higher Education curricula. The RRI Tools project, the HEIRRI project and the EnRRICH project, all share an interest in developing students' capacities to conduct research responsibly and ensure the outputs of research and innovation are responsive to societal needs and concerns. The curriclum design tools and teaching activities shared in the symposium gave inspiring ideas on how to wed research-based education with the development of competences that support students to navigate the challenges of our time.

The conference chair, Dr Dilly Fung, is coordinator of an ambitious 20 year institutional strategy at University College London, called the Connected Curriculum. Comprising six dimensions of connectivity, Connected Curriculum sets out a plan for a joined up approach to education with the engagement of students in authentic research and inquiry as its cornerstone. You can read more about this approach in the recently published (and free) e-book below.
