International visit to the Department.

Dr. Ranjeet Singh from the Sherlock Institute of Forensic Science (SIFS) visited The Department of Chemistry in UCC this week for three days as part of his invited trip to Ireland from India.

This visit was facilitated by Dr Bernard Leddy who had recently visited India and invited Dr Singh to come to Ireland and explore potential business and collaborative opportunities. Dr Eric Moore was the point of contact for Dr Singh at UCC and arranged for him to deliver two guest seminar lectures to Chemistry staff and students on Cybercrime and Chemical Analysis. Dr Singh was also here in UCC to discuss collaboration activities with the Department on establishing links and accreditation for the on-line courses that SIFS currently offer at Postgraduate Diploma level. He also participated as a judge for Dr Mila Pravda’s 3rd year forensic science students mock criminal court field practical. There is great potential between SIFS and The Chemistry Department in UCC to open up a new market on blended postgraduate courses in Forensic Science and set up a private Forensic Laboratory which could potentially create jobs in Cork and strengthen Irelands ties with India.

The title of the two seminar presentation were:

"Cyber crime and prevention in silicon era"
"Forensic chemical analysis and gun shot residue examination"
