Prizes/Duaiseanna

The department tries to acknowledge students who perform well, even at such an early stage in their career. In the first year of “Folklore”, the department’s English language subject for BA, and of “Béaloideas”, the department’s Irish language subject for the BA, a small prize is awarded to the essay that achieves the best mark. The Draddy prize is given to the students who write the best essay in first year. We are grateful to Liam Ruiséal’s bookshop for offering a small award in recent years for this. In 2005 the department sponsored a perpetual trophy in storytelling at Oireachtas na Gaeilge, named after Bab Feiritéar, a female storyteller who had often shared her knowledge and gift with the students of the department.

Bíonn an Roinn ag iarraidh aitheantas beag a thabhairt do mhic léinn a chruthaíonn go maith sa léann seo, fiú ag tús an lae. Sa chéad bhliain den ‘Béaloideas’, ábhar Gaeilge na Roinne, agus den ‘Folklore’, ábhar Béarla na Roinne, bronntar duais aitheantais ar aiste is airde marc. Bronntar ‘Duais Uí Dhreada’ ar na mic léinn a scríobhann na haistí is fearr. Táimid buíoch de Siopa Leabhair Liam Uí Ruiséil a thug síntiús airgid don duais seo le tamall de bhlianta anuas. Ón bhliain 2005 chuir an Roinn corn buan sa scéalaíocht ar fáil d’Oireachtas na Gaeilge, ainmnithe i ndiaidh an ‘Bhab’, an scéalaí Bab Feiritéar a bhí fial flaithiúil le mic léinn an Béaloideas riamh. Beannacht Dé léi.
