Richard M. O'Connor PhD, Laboratory of Molecular and Behavioural Neuroscience, Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, was recently awarded the Barcroft medal for early stage postdoctoral researchers by the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland. 

The RAMI annual meeting is the premier Biomedical Science meeting in Ireland and provides a platform to showcase novel biomedical research. The meeting featured a high calibre scientific programme covering biomedical research currently ongoing around Ireland. The meeting also represents a forum for PhD students, undergraduate students and early career post-doctorate researchers to present their work in oral or poster form. Authors had the option of having their abstracts published in the Irish Journal of Medical Sciences, and there were a number of prizes and awards for presentations during the meeting. Notably, the Donegan Medal for first time presenters went to Eric Lucking of UCD with joint runner-up Donegan prizes going to Elaine Jennings and Mairead Hayes, both of NUI Galway.

The Barcroft Medal for early stage postdoctoral researchers went to Dr Richard O’Connor of UCC and the Best Postgraduate Student Poster Prizes were awarded to Eva Creedon and Tara Sugrue, NUI Galway and Gatambwa Mukandala, UCD. The Best Undergraduate Student Poster went to Clare O’Brien, NUI Galway and Best Postdoctoral Research Poster was awarded to Dr Sonia Prado-Lopez, NUI Galway.

The annual Conway Review Lecture was delivered by Dr John O’Connor, Conway Institute at UCD, who was also presented with the Conway Medal by Section Secretary, Professor Ken O’Halloran. The Conway Medal is awarded annually to an outstanding scholar in the biomedical sciences and the recipient is given the opportunity to present a lecture on their research.
