6 Mar 2008

A very successful launch of the Cork Neurosciences Group took place at Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, UCC. Over 100 people attended the meeting, a fantastic turnout for the inaugural meeting of the group.

The event was opened by UCC President Dr Michael Murphy who expressed his delight at the huge turnout and also at the level of interest in Neurosciences in Cork. He acknowledged the growing body of Neuroscience Investigators in Cork that are based in UCC, the associated Cork Hospitals and the Research Institutes.

This event will be followed up by monthly meetings showcasing neuroscience research at UCC and also neuroscience research in the national and international arena. A key aim of the group is to promote collaborative research between clinical and basic neuroscience researchers.

Cork NeuroScience (CNS) group comprises coherently linked projects in the fields of development, neural plasticity and repair. The Research group investigates a range of neurodegenerative, neurological and psychiatric diseases and disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy and seizures, multiple sclerosis, depression and anxiety, in addition to a number of other orphan brain diseases.  Work spans across basic and clinical research allowing translational discoveries.
