Dr André Toulouse elected Fellow of the Anatomical Society

10 Aug 2026

Congratulations to Dr André Toulouse, Senior Lecturer in Clinical Anatomy in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, who has been elected Fellow of the Anatomical Society (FAS).

The Anatomical Society is one of the oldest learned societies dedicated to advancing research and education in the anatomical sciences. Election to Fellowship is a mark of distinction awarded in recognition of sustained contributions to the discipline through research, education and professional service.

Dr Toulouse’s work spans both core anatomical sciences and anatomy education, with particular interests in dental anatomy, three-dimensional learning, neurophobia, and the development of innovative approaches to teaching complex anatomical concepts in health-professions education.

Throughout his career, Dr Toulouse has made significant contributions to anatomy education across medicine, dentistry, neuroscience and the allied health professions. His educational scholarship has been widely disseminated through peer-reviewed publications and funded projects exploring the use of digital technologies, 3D learning resources and student-centered approaches to support anatomy learning.

Dr Toulouse has supervised numerous postgraduate research students, many of whom have gone on to academic careers in anatomy and health-professional education in Ireland and internationally. He currently serves as Academic Lead for Teaching and Learning and Director of the MSc in Human Anatomy within the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience and has played a central role in curriculum development and quality enhancement across a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Commenting on the award, Dr Toulouse said:

"I am deeply honoured to be elected a Fellow of the Anatomical Society. This recognition reflects the support, collaboration and friendship of many colleagues, students and research trainees with whom I have had the privilege to work throughout my career. I am particularly grateful to the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience and to the Anatomical Society for their continued support of anatomical science and anatomy education."
