Congratulation Aine Watson awarded Medal of Distinction at the UK National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition

Congratulations to Aine Watson, BSc Neuroscience graduate 2026 who represented the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience UCC, at the UK National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition, and was awarded a medal and certificate for demonstrating outstanding excellence in achieving Distinction in the Pre-Clinical Category

The Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience supported Áine’s participation in the competition through Dr Harriet Schellekens, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy & Neuroscience and coordinator of the module AN3012: Human Nervous System, teaching core aspects of Neuroanatomy. Following Áine’s outstanding success, the Department has agreed to support a student to represent the Department at the National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition each year, with Dr Schellekens coordinating the initiative.

Commenting on Áine’s achievement, Dr Schellekens said:

“Áine’s success is a wonderful achievement and reflects both her strong knowledge of neuroanatomy and the considerable additional work she undertook in preparing for the competition alongside her final-year studies. The competition provides an excellent opportunity for our students to challenge themselves, deepen their knowledge of neuroanatomy and engage with students and experts from across the UK and Ireland. I am delighted that, following Áine’s success, we will support a BSc Neuroscience student to participate in the competition each year.”

The 14th National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition UK, held in collaboration with the Healthcare Leadership Academy organised by NUNC in partnership with Medics.Academy, took place on 30th May 2026 at the University of Glasgow. The competition which is open to any students studying an undergraduate degree in the UK or Ireland whose degree includes an anatomy component (e.g. Anatomy, Neuroscience) consists of 2 exams, A Single Best Answer paper and Laboratory-based Spotter Exam.

Aine Watson, recently graduated UCC BSc Neuroscience student,  was the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience representative and medal winner at the National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition held in Glasgow on 30^th May 2026.
