UCC Equality Week 2023

4 Oct 2023

A very poignant and symbolic event will be the ceremonial tree planting, in collaboration with The Gay Project, at the Rainbow Walkway, by Deputy President and Registrar Professor Stephen Byrne, to mark the 30th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Ireland. In the current societal atmosphere where we see increasing homophobic abuse and attacks it is important to acknowledge the progress that has been made but also to recognise the work that is still to be done to achieve equality.

Dr Claire Murray, Interim Director of UCC’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Unit and UCC law lecturer, said: “Equality Week is a great opportunity to highlight the impressive work that is being done throughout UCC to advance equality across the campus and wider society. This is why we run the EDI Soapbox – to give staff and students an opportunity to share their work and explain their understanding of how it contributes to enhancing equality, diversity, and inclusion. We are also really pleased to facilitate workshops on intercultural communication and developing accessible presentations this week as these provide practical support to colleagues and students to empower them to make UCC a more inclusive environment in which to work and learn.”
