Showcasing Inclusive Education for People with Intellectual Disabilities at UCC

15 May 2023

The Deputy President and Registrar Prof. Stephen Byrne gave the opening address at a showcase event for the id+ Project on 15th May 2023. The showcase highlighted UCC’s “co-learning” approach to inclusive education for people with intellectual disabilities (ID). Unique in the Irish higher education sector, co-learning allows degree students and students with ID to learn with, from and about each other in a wide range of subjects across all four Colleges in UCC including Geography, Engineering, Nursing and Law.

At the same event Prof. Byrne also launched a new microcredential on “Developing & Delivering Inclusive Education for People with Intellectual Disability in Further & Higher Education”. Designed for third-level teaching staff, this online training will meet the needs of those who want to develop their skills in inclusive education, a key deliverable of the National Access Plan 2022-2028.

The hybrid event was attended by higher education staff and policy makers from across Ireland, all keen to learn from UCC’s pioneering work in this area.
